Training Goals and Objectives

"Karate is a way of life."  Classes not only provide a variety of exercising techniques in self-defence but open your mind in learning to build self-confidence and self-respect.

Karate Teaching Style

Renshikan Karate-Do is an association formed by Sensei Akutagawa (founder Renshikan Karate-Do International).  Renshikan instructors teach traditional martial arts following Sensei Akutagawa’s focus of researching the most original Shito-Ryu karate katas.  The study of Karate incorporates:  Kata (forms), Kihon (basic movements), Kumite (fighting, and self defence) and Bunkai (take-down techniques, locks, kata applications).  Also incorporated in Renshikan are the study of Iaido (Japanese swordsmanship), basic Judo breakfall techniques, Takeda-Ryu Aikido, and traditional Okinawan weapons.

School Philosophy

Martial arts is a life-long learning process.  Focus is on the development of a strong mind, body, spirit, and character through safe training and self-discipline.  Emphasis is on building strong basic techniques before doing complex techniques similar to the concept that any building structure requires a foundation of support.  Determination and perseverance are seen as keys to success in accomplishing one's goals.  Importance is also placed on developing a sense of unity and camaraderie among the students and their families.  It is greatly appreciated whenever family come to watch classes and demonstrations.

History

Dr. Ling was a long time member of the Kitimat Karate Club in northern B.C., where he taught for many years. Delta Karate School was founded in 1993 by Dr. Chee K. Ling and his daughter Mee Lain Ling.  The facility was built on the Ling's private residence initially as a training area for regular exercises and to prepare the Ling family members for national and international competition.  Due to demand for karate instruction from neighbours, Mee Lain with guidance from her father, began teaching young children.  Adult classes started in 1996.

Facilities

Classes are taught in a 1000 square foot area fully equipped with judo tatami mats, mirrors, protective gear, martial arts books, punching bag+pads, and shower facilities.
