A Change of Pace
My mother was looking for a place to live in the fall of '96 when she visited an open house at the Canoe Pass Marina. The unique lifestyle appealed to her immediately.
After consulting an architect and purchasing a water lot in the nearby Marina Wes-del, her (now) much beloved float home was constructed and launched by late November '97.

Area
Wesdel Marina is situated on Canoe Pass which is an arm of the Fraser River. It is situated south east of Ladner, British Columbia (Canada). There is an incredible variety of water fowl because of the nearby Reifel Bird Sanctuary
In the evenings, we like to walk along the dike. This dike extends all around the delta giving an unobstructed 360 degree view of the Coastal Mountains, Mount Washington and the gulf islands. The most amazing site on the dike is the beautiful sunset over the waters of the Juan De Fuca Strait.
There is very little water traffic in Canoe Pass. The manually operated swing bridge built in the early 1900s allows cars to pass to Westham Island and the bird sanctuary.

Life
Living on a float home allows for all the luxuries of a land-locked house and more... There is a garage with a loft on shore, a boat slip next to the house and no lawn mower needed! We live in a 3 level, 3.5 bedroom house with decks on all floors where you stumble over the potted flowers and plants. We have many skylights and windows allowing a lot of natural light into the house. Sewage is disposed of via a sceptic plant ofshore, causing little impact on the river.

Many people ask if the house moves with the waves. Our float home moves slightly during a heavy storm. The hanging lamps swing gently and the pictures on the wall never hang quite straight.....
The effects of the 14 foot tides are unnoticeable other than a change of scenery during the day.
The live-aboards in the marina add considerably to the ambiance of the floating community. The level of interaction and codependance is considerably higher than in suburbia and they are eager participants in our summer potluck parties.

Activities
Possibly Vancouver's best kept secret are the marshlands of the Fraser River Delta. Within a few minutes by our 8-foot zodiac is a vast wonderland of intertwining islands and canals. My most favorite beach is located east of Barber Island. From the old picnic bench is the most amazing view of the city scape of Vancouver. A few minutes from there and I am travelling through the fishing community of Ladner which reminds me somewhat of the north of Holland.

Steveston, a large fishing port, is a 20 minute boat ride from our float home. It boasts an incredible variety of seafood restaurants. During the fishing season, fishing boats will often sell their catch from the government docks.
