MR2 Mk1 Production

When it comes to MR2 Mk1's, we all know that there are only so many out there, and that the number is declining.

How many MR2's are around? This table below shows the production numbers for the MR2 Mk1 worldwide. I was in some ways surprised to see that most MR2's were 85 and 86 units making up well over 65% of all units built for USA/Canadian markets. That explains a lot about why when I am looking for parts for my 1987, that there aren't all that many out there.

The moral to the whole story is - if you have anything built in 1987-1989, you'd be wise to get and stockpile any parts you can while there are still units being torn down as parts vehicles. While Toyota will have some parts, we can be assured they will run out - and frankly some interior and power train parts are already unavailable.

For instance - do you want to buy a new 3-point steering wheel? Lots of luck. They are $700 USD new (obviously a custom item). There were numerous parts changes going from 86 to 87 when significant improvements were made to the car - and that includes the cruise system. The 86 version won't fit (learned from sad experience), and you are facing a $700 USD parts bill for the actuator and vacuum pump (usual culprits).

So if your interior is looking worn, or you are worried about key or exotic components, its time to

THINK AHEAD!!
