Welcome to this, one of the few websites in existance, that bear witness to history's largest conflict, that between the collossal powers of Russia and Germany that occured between 1941 and 1945. This brutal war has often been reffered to a "the clash of titans" and through the photos shown in this website you will see unique photos of the war that have never been seen before. Searching the web, it is almost impossible to find any photo-based websites on the subject - even though the conflict was well documented by German soldiers especially. These photos capture the awful truth of the war - the devastation, the death, the brutal conditions, the awesome scope of the conflict. These photographs bear witness to history and each one of them captures a moment in time. These photos express no political viewpoint and the author is not pro-German or pro-Russian, but merely wants to document to the world what happened during four devastating years of total war.
While German press photographers most often stuck to "glory" images of their troops in action, the average German soldier was free to photograph whatever captured his attention. In many cases, their camera turned to the tragic cost of war as you will see in the following photographs. These photos have come directly from the photo albums of German soldiers, many of which have sat in dusty attics since the war ended nearly 60 years ago. As the remaining veterans of the conflict pass on, their photographs are coming available for viewing, and are often for sale. The author has been to Russia twice and has seen first-hand some of the battlefields and the monuments. Even now, the "Great Patriotic War" as the conflict is know in the former Soviet Union, is the subject of intense interest, and pride in that the Russian people overcame the odds and fought until final victory, albiet at the cost of an estimated 27 million lives.
