The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) was incorporated in January 1967 following the 1965 Provincial legislation which stablised a partnership between electoral areas and municipalities within the regional district boundaries. Regional districts were designed to provide services and land use regulation to unincorporated areas: to provide services to municipalities and unincorporated areas that are best done jointly; and, to provide access to the borrowing power of the Municipal Finance Authority.
The SCRD is made up of five electoral areas (Egmont/Pender Harbour, Halfmoon Bay, Roberts Creek, Elphinstone and West Howe Sound) and three member municipalities (District of Sechelt, Sechelt Indian Government, District and the Town of Gibsons). The SCRD Board is made up of one director representing each of the areas within the regional district. The electoral area directors are elected for a three-year term. The municipal directors are appointed by their councils for a one year term.
