History of the Run |
|
.We are the Pegasauruses. Why you ask? Seven years ago I heard of an event called the Relay for a Friend, now called Relay for Life. This fundraising event was in support of those battling cancer, living with cancer, survivors of cancer and to remember those who were stolen by cancer. At that time my friend Peg was fighting. I started our team of family and friends in her honour. Because she was the oldest of our team (old like a dinosaur) (she’s not really that old) we became the Pegasauruses. That year with Peg inspiring us we started on our fundraising journey. Peggy won her battle! The Run For Life started in 2003 as a means of raising money for our Relay for a Friend team. After doing several carwashes, clothing drives and pub nights we hit upon the idea of holding a run , hoping to raise a larger sum of money towards a cure for cancer. That first year we had a turnout of 178 participants and raised $5000.00! Wow, not bad for a first time venture! That inspired us to continue on. In June of 2004 another member of our team was diagnosed with brain cancer. Unfortunately David, my husband, did not win his fight with cancer and passed away June 20,2004 but he was the inspiration for a very successful Run that year. The 2004 Run for Life had 232 participants and raising a whopping $10,000! Today David is somewhere smiling down on us, proud that we are continuing our journey to raise awareness and money to help find a cure for cancer. The Run in 2005 was a very damp occasion. Just when you thought it couldn’t rain any harder it did. But that did not dampen the spirits of the participants and volunteers. Despite the weather 108 hardy souls ran and walked raising $7000.00. Nothing soggy with those numbers! 2006 saw again the threat of nasty weather but the rain stopped in time for the start of the run. One hundred people came out and still managed to raise a very respectable sum of $5500. 2007—will be updated after the event People walk or run this race for many people but for just one reason: to do their part in helping to find a cure for cancer so no one in the future will lose a mother, father, sister, brother, an aunt or uncle, a child, a friend, a wife or husband. So for those who have been touched by cancer and for those that have been taken…
