                                      MODEL OF A LUNG

 

Introduction

 

           

            In this activity, a working model of a lung will be made.  Before doing this activity, the student should learn the parts of the lungs and their functions.  This activity should be performed with adult assistance.

 

Materials & Equipment

           

            straw

rubber band

            clear plastic cup

            Play-doh™

            large balloon  (approximately 12-15 inches)

            small balloon  (any size significantly smaller than the large balloon)

 

 

Procedure

 

1)      Get an adult to assist you with this activity, as this activity involves sharp objects.

2)      Secure the small balloon to the end of a straw using a rubber band.

3)      In the bottom of a clear plastic cup, poke a hole large enough for the straw to fit through.  Ask an adult for help.

4)      Insert the straw and seal any openings with Play-doh™.

5)      Cut the opening off of the large balloon and stretch the remaining segment overtop of the opening of the cup.  See picture below.

6)      To operate the model of the lung, use your fingers to pull down on the outer balloon.  Note observations.__________________________________________
