Peaceful Blue Nanoose Seabed
Nonukes Demonstration (Report Back)
1111 West Georgia Street; Tuesday, August 3, 10:30 am
-
There were actually demonstrations starting at 8:30 am
and going on till about 3:00 in front of the BC Gas Building. The
colourful nonukes banners and posters appeared on CBC TV and the highlight
of the televised was when David Krieger, President of the California based
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (which includes the Dalai Lama and Bishop
Desmond Tutu on its Advisory Council) specifically mentioning nuclear weapons
as being the main issue of concern to local people. The objective
of publicizing and the hearings and the nukes issue was achieved.
It would be nice to have demos going on every day until the conclusion
of the hearings August 17. Individual citizens are making incredibly
moving presentations on their own behalf and also for their community organizations.
Inspiring presentations! Incredibly varied and yet sharing a common
strong focus of nonukes in the Strait.
The Sunshine Coast Peace Group is planning a peaceful, creative
"seabed" demonstration on the first day of Nanoose Bay Expropriation
hearings in Vancouver. The feds want to take the Nanoose seabed from
BC in order to ensure the continued presence of U.S. nuclear powered
and nuclear armed ships in Georgia Strait . Bring your blue foamy
camping mattress, your musical instruments, your smile. We'll
sit/lie on
the foamies to symbolize our determination to protect the Nanoose
seabed, part of our home. ( Info: Stephanie: 885-6410 Denise:
