Letter  to Minister of Defence

Minister of Defence

The following letter was given over for delivery to the United
States Commander of the Los Angeles class submarine yesterday. This attack
submarine class is the most frequent user of CFMETR and is nuclear
powered and ready to be loaded with nuclear-tipped cruise missles in times
of crisis, and there is no assurance that nuclear weapons are not on
board.
There have been accidents involving submarines in Georgia Strait,
including a collision with a pleasure craft and the snagging of the net of
a fishing boat.  Yesterday's gale force winds and low visibility certainly
adds to the concern we feel when nuclear capable vessels are present in
shipping channels as it steamed south from the weapons range during the
height of the storm.  The Auditor General once again, this year, pointed
out serious flaws in any emergency preparedness plans should the
unthinkable ever occur.
Your continued support for this weapons development undermines
every Canadian initiative for nuclear disarmament and further subjugates
Canada to the U.S. nuclear strategy, including the policy of maintaining a
first-strike capability.
Citizens of the affected region will continue to moniter and protest
every infringement of our right to live in safety. The will of the people,
Canadian and international law support all necessary actions to ensure the
health of 2 million people and the region's irreplaceable environment.

Subject:  NN: USS GREENVILLE IN ESQUIMALT HARBOUR
    From:   "Jane P. Brett" <jbrett@home.com>

Betty Brightwell ( Raging Granny) has this to say about the ship Janet
Hawksley (Honourary Raging Granny) discovered slipped into harbour last night:
"This Los Angeles class SSN 772, USS Greenville nuclear submarine is now
sitting in Esquimalt harbour with Santa perched on its deck.  What can one
say about the contrast in ideology - world destruction sporting a child's
Christmas icon! "

IF YOU HAVE A YELLOW SIGN,
PLEASE PUT IT UP FOR THE WEEKEND AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS.

CBC Magazine (Channel 2 Victoria) had Dr. John Clearwater on last night in a
long and detailed documentary about Canada's lengthy involvement with
nuclear weapons.  His new book, "U.S. Nuclear Weapons in Canada," might be
on your Christmas wish list: it comes out next week. Together with his
previous book, "Canadian Nuclear Weapons,"  there is enough de-classified
information for all of us to use with our political representatives.  This
is real "ammunition".

Commander, U.S. submarine docked at Nanoose:

We are local citizens at the main gates of CFMETR.  We wish to
know what kind of submarine is at the base dock and whether this ship
is nuclear weapons capable or powered by nuclear reactors.
The Province of British Columbia Legislature passed a resolution
making the province nuclear free in l992.  If the ship you commandeer is
not nuclear free, we request you respect the wishes of the people of the
Province of British Columbia.

           In peace,

Sub at Nanoose is LA class Greenville.  Eileen Sowerby and I met the
entering workers this am with our yellow signs and informed the entering
workers of BC nukefree resolution.  Letters to US sub commander and
Canadian commander forwarded thru the main gate requesting them to respect
the wishes of the BC citizens.  Apparently, they have not yet as of this
afternoon as it is still on the range.  We will repeat our performance
tomorrow am if the sub is still at CFMETR dock.  Workers did comment on
the health of our little tree planted on Rememberance day, so perhaps we
will provide it with a sister tomorrow, on the other side of the main
gate.  Tooo small to decorate with the star of peace, but we will cheer on
it's growth. (6.30-8.30 am at the main gate as this is the busy time, if

any can join us in warm spirit)  Sunshine

Sub now at Nanoose

Report by Sunshine Goldsberry on December 7, 1999

Not sure what the sub is yet, as it came in under cover of dark, and noone
will tell us just what it is, except, yes, it's U.S., and we can see it's
big.  Two of us will be at the main gates early in the am to present a
letter to the US commander, requesting info on sub's nuclear capabilities
and reminding him, or her, that the Province of BC has legislated itself
as nuclearfree, please leave if you are not (with copies to those uppp and
down the ladder being faxed tomorrow).  If the sub returns tomorrow
evening, so will we, and  invite all to join us in physical or
spirit....Call if you need an update (250)248-8809.
